BIO/ (english follows) Pang Attack est le nouveau projet d’Alex Hackett, ancien chanteur/guitariste du groupe shoegaze montréalais Kill the Lights et vétéran de la scène indie-rock canadienne. Hackett a écrit toutes les pièces et joue lui-même de tous les instruments sur son premier EP, enregistré maison à l’automne 2010 avec l’aide d’un «ermite grec accro au café».
Kill The Lights s’est formé à Toronto en 2005, pour ensuite sortir deux albums ainsi qu’un EP, tous bien reçus par la critique, et effectuer plusieurs tournées au Canada, avant de se séparer à l’été 2010. Suite à cette expérience riche en rebondissements, Hackett dit être simplement reconnaissant d’avoir réussi, contre vents et marées, à créer une musique qu’Exclaim! a qualifié «d’œuvre d’art».
C’est ainsi qu’après avoir tiré bien des leçons, cumulé plusieurs milles de tournée et observé une période de deuil, Hackett a redirigé ses énergies vers l’intérieur pour imaginer et composer les six chansons qui allaient devenir son premier projet solo. Si Kill the Lights était un bouillonnant nuage de feedback, de reverb et d’énergie rythmique, Pang Attack, pour sa part, allait impliquer un dépouillement de couches sonores. Le projet se voulait doux et intime, construit en grande partie sur le jeu de guitare toujours plus complexe d’Hackett.
Pang Attack is the new project by Alex Hackett, former singer/guitarist for Montreal shoegaze band Kill The Lights and veteran of the Canadian indie-rock scene. Hackett played all the instruments and wrote all the parts on his debut EP, home-recorded in the fall of 2010 with the help of a reclusive Greek coffee-addict.
Kill The Lights started out in Toronto in 2005, toured Canada a number of times, and released two critically-acclaimed albums and one EP before calling it quits in the summer of 2010. Every working partnership is a minor miracle, but things shift. In the end, Hackett says, he was simply thankful to be able, against many odds, to make music that Exclaim! called “beautiful works of art”.
Lessons learned, touring mileage banked, mourning period observed, Hackett directed his energies inward to imagine and compose the 6 songs that would become his solo debut. KTL had been a broiling cloud of feedback, reverb and rhythmic energy. Pang Attack would involve a stripping-down of sonic layers. It would be quiet and intimate, built largely around Hackett’s ever-more-complex guitar-work
